Some of these titles might make a lovely gift for that reader you know who is finally (finally!) able to plan a vacation. (I love surprising people with gifted digital books.)

When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo is a Kindle Daily Deal at $1.99 that appears to be price-matched. Woo hoo! This is the second novella in the Singing Hills Cycle series, and it has a 4.3-star average on Goodreads!

Aarya mentioned this one in a December 2020 Hide Your Wallet, saying, “Vo is my favorite fantasy debut of 2020 and these novellas are so good! Highly rec both novellas in the Singing Hills Cycle series.”

“Dangerous, subtle, unexpected and familiar, angry and ferocious and hopeful. . . . The Empress of Salt and Fortune is a remarkable accomplishment of storytelling.”—NPR

A Curious Beginning

B00SI0B5F8.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn is $2.99! This is the first book in the Veronica Speedwell series, which is historical mystery featuring a ferociously independent lepidopterist and murders, murders to be solved everywhere, just all the time. I really like this series, and the slowly developing relationships that run throughout. If you’ve been curious, a book one sale is always handy!

In her thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries, returns once more to Victorian England…and introduces intrepid adventuress Veronica Speedwell.

London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

The Ashford Affair

The Ashford Affair by Lauren Willig is $2.99! A historical fiction with dual timelines and a family secret, this book has a 3.8-star average on Goodreads. Fans of the Pink Carnation series may like this, though reviewers caution it has less spying and derring-do than that series. Have you read this one?

As a lawyer in a large Manhattan firm, just shy of making partner, Clementine Evans has finally achieved almost everything she’s been working towards—but now she’s not sure it’s enough. Her long hours have led to a broken engagement and, suddenly single at thirty-four, she feels her messy life crumbling around her. But when the family gathers for her grandmother Addie’s ninety-ninth birthday, a relative lets slip hints about a long-buried family secret, leading Clemmie on a journey into the past that could change everything. . . .

What follows is a potent story that spans generations and continents, bringing an Out of Africa feel to a Downton Abbey cast of unforgettable characters. From the inner circles of WWI-era British society to the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the red-dirt hills of Kenya, the never-told secrets of a woman and a family unfurl.

Overseas

Overseas by Beatriz Williams is $4.99 – a little higher than the sale prices we usually feature, but most of Williams’ books are $9-15 digitally, so that’s a pretty spiffy discount. This was Williams’ first novel, and it’s also a somewhat dual timeline, the specifics of which are a bit of a spoiler. It has a 3.5-star average on Goodreads. Have you read this one?

Julian’s never seen her before, but she has information about the reconnaissance mission he’s about to embark on. Who is she? And why did she track him down in Amiens?
