Welcome to our Fourth Eliminations post for SPFBO 7. This week, we have grouped our five brave entrants together into a “Kick Ass” batch. You can find out more about this week’s posts in our Meet the Batch post. Read on to find out which three of them fell in our third batch of eliminations, listed in alphabetical order. Gathering of the Four by A.E.Bennett Theo: It’s an interesting premise – a far future America where amber eyed magic using aliens (Xanthi) live alongside humans in a realm that has echoes of the founding fathers. The aliens have become subjugated, an indentured form of service known as servantry evokes strong parallels with slavery. An illega…

Earlier in the year, Will from Gollancz invited me to take part in a read-a-long for A Little Hatred, the first book in Joe Abercrombie’s Age of Madness Trilogy, to build up to the release of the final part of the trilogy, The Wisdom of Crowds, this month. At the time, I was mad-busy, apologised and declined, sulked for a bit… But then Will invited me to take part in the second part of the read-a-along – for The Trouble with Peace – and this time I knew I had to take part. There is so much love out there for Abercrombie’s books, so not only was I looking forward to diving into his new trilogy and returning to Midderland; but I couldn’t wait to chat about Trouble with th…

On Wednesday, we announced our fourth trio of eliminations and revealed that this week’s two quarter-finalists from the “Kick Ass” batch are BLOOD BOUNTY by Liza Street and THE NAMELESS AND THE FALLEN by Scott Kaelen. Kicking ass is what many fantasy protagonists do best. Interestingly though, our two quarterfinalists both upped the ante a bit by giving their leading characters some pretty hard to kick antagonists. See the judges’ comments below, with the books – as before – listed in alphabetical order! Blood Bounty by Liza Street Theo: This is one of the first entries I sampled for this year’s competition. As in previous years I tend to get wordier in my …

Today G.R. Matthews stops over at the Hive for a guest post! He tells us all about his journey from struggling to finish one whole book, to succeeding at getting a traditional publishing deal. So without further ado, we’ll let him take over the keyboard: Reading. That’s what started it all. Books from the library when I was a teenager – luckily, my village in Wiltshire (UK) had a well-stocked one that was even featured on a popular children’s TV show (how’s that for fame?). Once I had a little money from the Saturday job, I started to buy books from the popular chain store that just happened to be on my walk from college to the bus station. RPGs. It started ther…

On Wednesday, we announced our sixth trio of eliminations and revealed that this week’s two quarter-finalists from the “different” batch are SHADOWS OF IVORY by T.L. Greylock/Bryce O’Connor and WINDS OF STRIFE by U.G .Gutman. These two battle it out in our final quarterfinal of SPFBO 7 In treading a different path in fantasy fiction, our two quarter-finalists stretched our expectations of fantasy protagonists. One gave us a cruel man who finds and murders witches but considers that a mercy, even as his actions eat away at him. The other gave us a young woman gifted by position and wealth, but who sets out to find battles she can win by virtue of her wit and intellec…

OK – I know the expectation of competitions is that there should be FOUR quarter-finals, but if Douglas Adams could write five books in the (increasingly inaccurate) Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy, then the Hive can definitely have 6 quarterfinals. On Wednesday, we announced our fifth trio of eliminations and revealed that this week’s two quarter-finalists from the “Starting Anew” batch are THE SPEAR OF AKVALOON by Toby Bennett and WINDWARD by S. Kaeth. While many fantasy characters have to start afresh after some life convulsing event, they are not always able to do so with some implicitly trustworthy Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi figure, nor are the new recruits to…

You can find out more about this week’s posts in our Meet the Batch post. Read on to find out which three of them fell in our fifth batch of eliminations, listed in alphabetical order. Dive Endless Skies by Chris Reign Theo: This is the third year in a row we’ve had a litRPG book in the Hive’s batch. This one is very resonant of my World of Warcraft experience – even down to a starter quest to kill a troublesome boar. However, it also manages to convey a sense of a real story in there as low level Eyre bypasses the tuto…

Images by Svetlana Alyuk, banner by Imyril Welcome to Fantasy Friday! If you’re following us on Twitter and Instagram, you’ll have had your feed completely spammed noticed that we’re taking part in the Wyrd & Wonder photo challenge. We decided that we’d take the challenge a step further on Fridays, and post about the prompts in a little more detail. This week, the prompt is fantasy voices from around the world – we’re focusing on authors rather than setting (see last week’s post) Underlined book titles in bold contain links to reviews on this site. Nils I’m going to pick two titles from my to-be-read because I’m thoroughly looking forward to both. My first choi…

Cock thy ears to the voice of ancient wisdom. He who has cast mighty dragons down from the sky and made sweet love to them. He who has thwarted a veritable carnival procession’s worth of dark lords, via a series of catspaws and proxies. He who is called, through the ancient ritual of court enforced community service, to answer your questions when you find that mortal wisdom is insufficient to see you through the tangled maze of confusion in which you find yourselves. *** Hey Ulesorin, Nobody ever gets my jokes. I tell them, and they flop every time. Send magical help please, Laughless in Leattle *** My Dearest Laughless, I must confess that I am all too famil…

Images by Svetlana Alyuk, banner by Imyril This year, the Wyrd and Wonder crew are hosting a read-along of Andrea Stewart’s The Bone Shard Daughter. Nils, Beth and Filip will be joining in; for Beth and Filip, it’s a re-read and re-listen along, but for Nils it’s her first time reading Stewart’s epic debut. Which makes our whatsapp chats quite difficult… We’ll be sticking to the following reaching schedule, and posting a weekly discussion of that week’s chapters every Sunday. Imyril will be doing the same on her blog, and everyone is welcome to join in! If you don’t have a blog, feel free to join in the conversation on Twitter, or you can check out the Goodreads …

Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark is the first full length novel set in his alternate Cairo universe. Other works set in this same universe include the novellas, The Haunting of Tram Car 015 and A Dead Djinn in Cairo which were both published by Tor.com. Master of Djinn was first published in the US by Tor once again, but Orbit Books picked up the UK publishing rights in 2021. Therefore before the UK release this book had already received quite a buzz and I was curious to see what it was all about. Set in 1912, Cairo, Master of Djinn tells the story of Agent Fatma, the youngest female working in the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities. When all t…

We recently shared our Most Anticipated SFF Releases for 2021, and a great number of those books were second/third or even fourth books within series. So we gathered up our contributors and asked – what’s your favourite series? This of course then posed the question: on-going or completed? We’re aware this can be Hot Topic, but here on the Hive, we’re of the stance that it’s important to support our favourite authors whether they’re at the start of a series, mired in the middle of it, or safely through the other side. So we’ll be recommending a series that’s on-going, as well as one that’s completed (for instant bingeing). As always, a big thank you to our contribut…

With each volume of the Stormlight Archives it is getting harder to review without giving spoilers, and whilst I’ve tried my hardest to keep plot details to a minimum and concentrate more on characters and themes, please be aware there will be some spoilers for previous books in the series and perhaps minor ones for Rhythm of War. What can I say about the Stormlight Archives which I haven’t already said? I don’t think anything I write here could even begin to express how phenomenal this series is. Now that I have come to finish the fourth book, my mind is a buzz with the sheer magnitude of the events which took place in this novel, the revelations which made me audibl…

The Decision Once they had read all six of the semi-finalists, all five judges ranked the books from 1st (most favourite) to 6th (least favourite) We added up the ranks to get a total rank, and divided by the number of judges to get an average rank. The six books were then placed in order ready for posting. When it came to the two books we have reviewed today this is how the numbers worked out. Illborn Shadows of Ivory Theo 2nd 1st Belle 2nd 1st Peter 2nd 4th Scarlett 1st 2nd Calvin 2nd 1st Total Ranking 9 9 Average ranking 1.8 1.8 It’s a tie! This serves to emphasise how close run the decision was and how, in quite different ways, these are t…

The Fantasy Hive have collaborated with award winning publisher Angry Robot Books to bring you a Women In SFF: Behind the Scenes post. My name is Lauren, and I’m a fantasy author of character-driven stories and epic adventure. My books usually contain dragons, rarely feature romance, and are typically fun and hopeful. I live in a tiny village in the UK, have a degree in Psychology, and was a professional copywriter before going full-time as an author—swapping corporate copy for magic and dragons! I’ve previously published under the name L.L. McNeil. Welcome to the Hive, Lauren! Let’s start with the basics: dazzle us with an elevator pitch! Why should readers check out your work? DRAGONS! MAGIC! CURSES! VENGEFUL SPIRITS! Honestly no idea if shouting random things will help or not, but hopefu…

And in case you prefer written reviews, here it is: Series: Empires of Dust (#1) Published by: Harper Voyager Genre: Dark fantasy, literary fantasy Pages: 470 I have long meant to read through Anna Smith Spark’s Empires of Dust trilogy. The ways it’s spoken about make it out to seem custom-made for me: one of the darker series out there, it aims for a more literary tone, its language can be staggeringly beautiful, and its characters are finely crafted, clawing for even the smallest fragment of light in a world whose darkness overwhelms all. Reading it, I found all these purported qualities to be well in line with my own impressions, even as one sensation eclipsed all…

Many know him as comedian Christophe the Insultor, something of a cult figure on the renaissance festival circuit. He lives in St. Petersburg, Florida. His first novel, ‘Those Across the River,’ was nominated for a World Fantasy Award for best novel in 2012. Welcome to the Hive, Christopher! Thank you!
