All In RECOMMENDED: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt is $1.99! Redheadedgirl gave the book an A: I felt like this was full of Shakespearean drama, and scheming families, and hot sex, and gorgeous clothes, but also some important things to say about how the world is functioning. There’s a lot going on, though, and the ending a tad rushed. In the cutthroat world of Sweden’s financial elite, no one knows that better than corporate raider David Hammar. Ruthless. Notorious. Unstoppable. He’s out to hijack the ultimate prize, Investum. After years of planning, all the players ar…

An Easy Death An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris is $3.99! This is the first book in the fantasy western Gunnie Rose series. I’m super curious about it and have the first book just sitting on my TBR. One thing that does bug me is that the third book in the series is coming out and the cover is a big departure from the previous two books. The beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series, the inspiration for HBO’s True Blood, and the Midnight Crossroad trilogy adapted for NBC’s Midnight, Texas, has written a taut new thriller—the first in …

C+ Queen of Coin and Whispers by Helen Corcoran April 23, 2020 · The O'Brien Press Teen FictionLGBTQIAScience Fiction/FantasyYoung Adult Confession time: I skip to the end within the first 10% of most books. (Please don’t yell at me. I’ve already been told by horrified friends that it’s a moral failing.) When I skipped to the end of Queen of Coin and Whispers, I was hit by one of the most compelling lines I’ve read in a long time: She loved me as I loved her, fierce as a bloodied blade. Does it give you shivers, t…

http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/themes/smartbitches/images/posts/kickass-women.jpg This month in Kickass Women in History we salute Queen Nanny (also known as Granny or Grandy Nanny and Nanny of the Maroons) a hero of Jamaican history. Jamaica’s original inhabitants were the Arawak and Taino people. Upon Columbus’ landing in 1494, the island became the property of Spain and most of the Arawaks and Tainos were murdered or killed by disease. Spain “imported” African slaves, many of whom escaped during the violent transition from Spanish to British rule. These and other escapees formed bands and villag…

Cocaine Blues Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood is 99c and a KDD! This is book one in the Phryne Fisher Mysteries series. Elyse previously reviewed it and gave the book a B. In summary, she said that while the book was tons of fun to read, there were some things the TV show just did better, namely the costumes. First in series from bestselling author, Kerry Greenwood Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, now streaming on Netflix, starring Essie Davis as the honourable Phryne Fisher The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honourable Phryne Fisher…

The Curse of Chalion The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold is $1.99! This fantasy novel has been recommended several times in the site’s comments over the years. Some readers felt their interest in the main character waned, but overall, they enjoyed the plot. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads. A man broken in body and spirit, Cazaril returns to the noble household he once served as page and is named secretary-tutor to the beautiful, strong-willed sister of the impetuous boy who is next in line to rule. It is an assignment Cazaril dreads, for it must ultimat…

The Ten Thousand Doors of January RECOMMENDED: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow is $3.99! I read this one and gave it a B+: If you’re in the mood for a lovely, tender fantasy novel about belonging and one that feels more like a long, relaxing bath than a hot, intense shower will all of the fancy pressure and pulsating settings you can imagine, you’ll love this one. It’s a soothing pick for when you hope to take comfort in a book In the early 1900s, a young woman searches for her place in the world after finding a mysterious book in this captivating…

This HaBO is from Carrie, who is searching for this historical romance. And oof, it sounds a bit dark: I’m looking for a book I read in my early teens (probably early to mid 90s). It was a Viking themed book. The main character was a woman captured as a slave and was trying to protect her siblings (I think). She also desperately wanted to be a skald but of course “women don’t do that!” I also remember vivid descriptions of her starving before she was bought (maybe won in a bet?) by her hero Viking. He of course was the captain of a ship. Sound familiar? View the full article

The Duchess Deal RECOMMENDED: The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is $2.99! This is the first book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A grade: I totally recommend reading The Duchess Deal, but preferably while sober so you can really appreciate all of it. It’s the perfect blend of two of my favorite fairytale tropes, it’s got a hero who never an alpha-hole, it’s funny, and it’s got female friendship. What more could you want? When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules… Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’…

http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/recleague.pngThis Rec League was sent in to us by Persephone: I’m looking for books with characters who are adopted. The adoptions might be no big deal or they might be of some importance but the main plot is not about the adoption or the fact that the character was adopted. Amanda: Bolded for emphasis. And Sarah came through with ALL of the recs! A | BN | K | ABSarah: My brain short circuited with this one because my first thought was, “There’s about eight years of contemporary romances with this plot” and then PFFT not a single title could appear in my mind. BUT! Here are a few: The Wilder Trilogy by …

http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/poster-203x300.jpeg It is deeply rare that all four of the humans who reside in my home enjoy the same piece of entertainment. I think the last time this happened, we were watching Good Omens. Thunder Force is nothing like Good Omens except that all four of us had a terrific time watching it, and I was as immensely pleased with myself for selecting it for our Friday night pizza and a movie. It is ideal “watch over dinner” television. Thunder Force occupies the quadrant territory of media that is not objectively brilliant or perfect, but is immensely enjoyable while it’s on. It’s silly, it’s fun, and it’s a…

A This week I am joined by Shani and Bridget from the Romance at a Glance podcast! We talk about their current season, where they’re focusing on dark romances, and about podcasting. Then, we talk about a book. For this episode, we all read Draekon Mate: Exiled to the Prison Planet. Check this blurb: “Crashed spaceship. Prison planet. Snarling, lethal predators. Two big, hulking, bronzed aliens who turn into dragons. The best part? The dragons insist I’m their mate.” The Zorahn wanted women for some kind of super-secret science experiment, and I volunteered. Dumb move, right? But they promised we’d be safe, and they offered a lot of money. Money I needed desperately. Of…

http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/themes/smartbitches/images/posts/elyses-knitting-thumb.jpg I achieved STABLE long ago (stash acquisition beyond life expectancy). If I stopped buying yarn now I’d have enough to knit with for years. The problem is, yarn is pretty and soft and colorful, and I am absolutely not going to stop buying it. Yarn is my happy place…er, thing. Yarn makes me joyful. I like knitting with it. I like squishing it at the yarn store. When I need to relax mentally, I look at yarn on Instagram. That’s exactly how I found these indie dyers that I absolutely love. These dyers are so cool that I just had to share them wi…

A- Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell February 2, 2021 · Tor Books LGBTQIARomanceScience Fiction/Fantasy CW/TW for the review and the book While overall hopeful and happy, this book deals pretty heavily with the fallout from emotional and physical abuse. I found it to be handled well and not graphically detailed when described, but this theme is not something I would have picked up from the blurb so readers should be prepared. Bitchery, I feel personally attacked by how good Winter’s Orbit was. I feel that this b…

Her Night with the Duke Her Night with the Duke by Diana Quincy by $1.99! This is a new series by Quincy and the first in the Clandestine Affairs series. I remember seeing a lot of buzz for this one when it came out. Have you read this one? Desire knows no reason… When Lady Delilah Chambers finds herself stranded at a country inn on a rain-swept evening, she’s forced to fend off a group of ruffians with the help of a handsome gentleman. Irresistibly drawn to each other, Leela and the stranger spend one reckless night in each others’ arms—and then go their separate wa…

TW: child abuse, drug abuse, addiction and recovery Fans of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice might recall meeting Anne de Bourgh for a hot minute and also hearing her referred to incessantly by her domineering mother, Lady Catherine. The Heiress tells Anne’s story from her point of view, beginning in early childhood and extending through the entirety of her life. This book was not what I expected, but I loved it once I adjusted to its tone. While The Heiress contains a romance, it is less about romance and much more about the search of the protagonist for autonomy and purpose in her life. It may not be necessary to have read Pride and Prejudice to enjoy this novel…

The Governess Game RECOMMENDED: The Governess Game by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the second book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse gave this one a perfect grade, an A: It’s one of the best, if not the best, book I’ve read this year and it was worth all the hours I spent reading that should have been spent sleeping. He’s been a bad, bad rake—and it takes a governess to teach him a lesson The accidental governess After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper youn…

Matzah Ball Surprise Matzah Ball Surprise by Laura Brown is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a fake relationship. Sneezy had mixed feelings about this one and gave it a C: A lot of what’s good about this book was really good, but the things that didn’t work for me downgraded my experience a lot. This Passover is starting to feel like the ten plagues might be coming back to haunt them before the weekend is over…one hilarious misstep after the next. Gaby Fineberg just wants to get through Passover Seder without her “well meaning” family playing matchmaker. She…

Duke of Midnight The Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is Maiden Lane book 6, and it has a 4.1-star average. This series in particular is a favorite here at the Pink Palace. I know both Elyse and I have really enjoyed these books. Though they can operate as standalones, I believe every three books or so starts a new major story arc. Correct me if I’m wrong! WHEN A MASKED MAN . . . Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disgui…

C- Her Kind of Cowboy by Dylann Crush January 12, 2021 · Berkley Romance Her Kind of Cowboy, from the Tying the Knot in Texas series, promises pit bulls and penguins, and it delivers on the pit bulls and somewhat on the penguins. What it does not deliver is a plausible, coherent, consistent storyline or plausible, in depth character development. Don’t get me wrong, I found it highly entertaining, but a large amount of my entertainment came from pondering the many odd things about it (and a couple of troubling things…

An Extraordinary Union HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $2.99! This could expire ASAP. Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. Sarah completely loved it: First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain. …
