This isn’t about romance or the reading community, but this here is still a blog, and it wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t read Dooce, the blog written by Heather Armstrong, back in the early days of the internet. I spend a fair amount of time looking back on the site and its history, and how romance readership and its communities have changed, and Dooce is tangled up in so much of that history for me. I can’t fully articulate the complicated feelings I have about Heather’s death, which was announced on her Instagram this morning. If I look in reverse chronological order, her positive influence for me ended ages ago, but I can’t deny how much her blog shaped my life. Recentl…

Some of It Was Real Some of It Was Real by Nan Fischer is $1.99! I mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I was definitely curious about the medium character. Did any of you pick this one up? A psychic on the verge of stardom who isn’t sure she believes in herself and a cynical journalist with one last chance at redemption are brought together by secrets from the past that also threaten to tear them apart. Psychic-medium Sylvie Young starts every show with her origin story, telling the audience how she discovered her abilities. But she leaves out a lot—th…

This HaBO comes from Gloriamarie, who wants to find this historical romance: Recently, I remembered reading a truly crazy sauce romance. Unfortunately I don’t remember much of it. But what I do remember has my head spinning. There is a husband and his wife. He may have a title. They have been married for a while and it’s kinda stale. The interesting thing is that they are both pirates. Each wears a mask. Somehow they meet in their pirates’ disguises and passionate sexy times ensue while still wearing their masks. I have never understood how they didn’t recognize each other, their bodies, the way they touch each other etc. but they don’t. Anyway, they continue to meet …

The Kiss Quotient RECOMMENDED: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang is $2.99! (This could be a leftover KDD from the weekend.) I’m jealous of those who get to read this for the first time. We had a wonderful guest squee of this and it was my favorite read of 2018: I truly loved this book. Loved. It made me feel like a champagne bubble – all fizzy and light. When I think of all the magical feelings romance gives its readers, I will forever think of this book. A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there’s not enough data in the world to predict w…

Let’s dive into some Cover Snark! From lils: Wheeewww. If his pits smell so bad he noticed…how does he think his ‘fated mate’ will react? Sarah: How many pit sniff covers have we featured by now? Also that dragon is hellaciously cute. I bet his name is Pinky. Amanda: Okay, but have any of the other pit sniff covers featured an angry body odor dragon? Sarah: Poor Pinky the Body Odor Dragon. So unappreciated. Sneezy: Does this mean there’s an Old Spice Dragon? What’s the relationship between these dragons? Enemies to lovers? Susan: I can’t tell if the texture on his skin is supposed to be water or cracking. Maybe he’s trying to let out the dragon inside and that’s…

Sarah and I frequently talk about video games, and I thought it would be fun to find pairings of video games and books that work well together. We’d also love to hear what games you’ve been playing recently and what books may complement them. Stardew Valley ( A ) is a cozy, farming game that Sarah and I have streamed many times. You revive a farm in a small town. Maybe you spend your day fishing or wooing one of the townspeople, but overall, it’s low angst. I’d pair this one with Spellbinding Love by Elizabeth Davis, which features a farm witch with a crush! The romance is light on conflict and makes for a quick read. … I’ve been super into Dredge lately, if you l…

Strange Practice Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw is $2.99! I’ve been so curious about this one because the heroine is a “fast-talking doctor to the undead.” It sounds all sorts of awesome. I definitely bought this after the last time it was on sale. If you’ve read this one, let me know what you thought! Meet Greta Helsing, fast-talking doctor to the undead. Keeping the supernatural community not-alive and well in London has been her family’s specialty for generations. Greta Helsing inherited the family’s highly specialized, and highly peculiar, medical practice. In h…

Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake RECOMMENDED: Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Carrie and I jointly reviewed this one and agreed on a B+. As a bisexual woman, I definitely felt seen by this book and I’m here for all the baking romance reads. Fans of Casey McQuiston, Christina Lauren, and Abby Jimenez will love this scrumptious and sweet romantic comedy from the “dizzyingly talented writer” of Boyfriend Material (Entertainment Weekly)! A- Dr. Perfect by Louise Bay April 20, 2023 · Louise Bay Contemporary Romance Dr. Perfect is a low stakes, low angst contemporary romance that’s as much about loving what you do as it is about finding the love of your life. Ellie Frost set aside her passion for cooking to work as a manager for her motorbike racer ex. When he breaks up with her, she’s left with a huge gap in her CV, no severance and few options (he, of course, kept her off the books). Ellie is determined to restart her life and scrape together the m…

Ed. note: This is clearly a current, ongoing, and difficult topic, and your feelings on reading books that include the COVID pandemic may be different. We want to remind folks that it’s ok to like very different things. This Rec League was sent in by Anna: I recently read Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld, which made me realize that reading a romance set during Covid, especially one that doesn’t sugarcoat lockdowns, could really help me cope with grief over everything that happened (privately and globally) during the pandemic. Could you recommend some? Sarah: For something light and a little goofy, there’s always Chuck Tingle, who has two releases: My Handsome Senti…

Welcome back to Wednesday Links! How are you all doing? We’ve reached May and it’s been a rainy start to spring in New England. I may have mentioned this before, but my partner and I are looking for a friend for Linus. Linus is my grumpy senior cat, who was diagnosed with a thyroid condition back in August. It’s really brought out some anxious behaviors and we think a little lady would be able to give him the company he needs when we can’t. We’re very nervous about the process, so whatever tips and tricks you may have would be much appreciated. The ideal is that they get along fine right off the bat, but that’s wishful thinking. … Let’s tap into some nostalgia with thi…

The Recovery Agent The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich is $2.99! I’m a sucker for things that make comparisons for Romancing the Stone. However, I worry this will be another Stephanie Plum, where the romance is dragged out forever. Lost something? Gabriela Rose knows how to get it back. As a recovery agent, she’s hired by individuals and companies seeking lost treasures, stolen heirlooms, or missing assets of any kind. She’s reliable, cool under pressure, and well trained in weapons of all types. But Gabriela’s latest job isn’t for some bamboozled billionaire, it’s …

Last week, Lara asked for advice on stopping herself from reading to do adult things like chores (yuck) when all she wants to do is read for hours on end. I knew while we were discussing it that many people would think, “Wow, that’s not my problem. I have the opposite issue: I struggle with finding time to start and keep reading!” And I promised we’d discuss that conundrum today. So, let’s get to it: What do you do to make sure you have time to read? Sarah: If I am reading a book that it’s easy to resist returning to and I’m not dying to find out what happens next, that’s a sign that it’s not necessarily a great fit for me at the moment, and that I should try someth…

Blood Heir Blood Heir by Ilona Andrews is $3.49 at Amazon! This is a spin-off of Andrews’ Kate Daniels series with the main character being Kate and Curran’s ward. Obviously this will be a more nuanced read if you’ve finished or are familiar with the prior series. I dropped off that train around book three. From award-winning author, Ilona Andrews, an all-new novel set in the New York Times #1 bestselling Kate Daniels World and featuring Julie Lennart-Olsen, Kate and Curran’s ward. Atlanta was always a dangerous city. Now, as waves of magic and technology compete for…

This HaBO request is Susan, who wants to track down this historical romance: I’m looking for a historical romance I read a few years ago. The heroine answers an ad for a position (can’t recall what it was for, maybe a governess?). In reality the hero had placed the ad under false pretenses. He is really looking for a wife and is using the ad to find somebody inappropriate to his family. He decides she’s the one that will really annoy his family. I think he had a falling out with his father (who is a duke?). I recall that she is the oldest or second oldest of a large family that is orphaned. She and her older brother have gone to London to earn money to send home to the …

The Calculating Stars RECOMMENDED: The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal is $1.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a B grade: Even though at first I found this book to be slow going, I came to appreciate it for its intersectional feminism and its unabashed adoration of all the science and math that goes into making space flight possible. A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s e…

Squee The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw May 2, 2023 · Tor Nightfire HorrorRomanceScience Fiction/Fantasy Dear readers, I would be remiss if I did not point out that Cassandra Khaw’s book The Salt Grows Heavy is about what happens when a horror story version of a mermaid teams up with a version of Frankenstein’s monster to burn it all down. It is, in its own blood-soaked, rage-fuelled way, a romance. There may not be many of us for whom this is our jam, but if it IS your jam, buckle up. The narra…
