Hey y’all! A few of you have messaged me or emailed about how Apple Podcasts was being weird with downloading latest episodes of Smart Podcast Trashy Books. The last two episodes weren’t downloading, even though the feed was not any different. Big Fun! Apple, being the incredibly helpful resource for end users with lots and lots of detailed documentation and step by step instructions… Show Spoiler …was surprisingly of little help. Anyway, here’s what seems to be the easiest solution: unsubscribe and resubscribe to the show, please? Seriously, I’m so sorry the effort is on your end, but that should solve the download issue. I think it’s like the podcast equivalent…

Polaris Rising RECOMMENDED: Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik is $1.99! This is a sci-fi romance and I absolutely loved it. You can read my A- here: I am so incredibly happy that this book is in the world, especially after feeling like I’ve exhausted all my sci-fi romance options. Polaris Rising is exciting. It’s funny. It’s fan-fucking-tastic. My quibbles are minor in comparison to the joyful Good Book Noises I made while reading this. As the seventh of nine children, Ada von Hasenberg knows that her only value to House von Hasenberg is as a political pawn in an arra…

Leia, Princess of Alderaan Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray is 99c! We ran a wonderful guest post by Crystal on Gray’s Star Wars novels and this one is definitely mentioned: In this book, Leia is a bold, idealistic teenage girl, in training for her role as ruler, and undergoing the trials that will prove her fitness for it. We get to see her relationship with her parents, Bail and Breha Organa. Breha, especially, gives us an understanding of why Leia is the woman she is. Explore the beginning of Leia’s participation in the Rebellion and the origin of her fr…

Sure Shot Sure Shot by Sarina Bowen is 99c! This is book four in the Brooklyn series, which I believe is a spin-off of the Brooklyn Bruisers series. Both, however, involve hockey and hockey players. A new stand-alone hockey romance from USA Today bestseller Sarina Bowen. On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, sports agent Bess Beringer is ready to make some changes. Armed with a five-year plan—indexed and color coded—she’ll tackle her personal life with the same zeal that she brings to her successful agency. A big, tall, ripped hunk of hockey player who’s just been t…

Beauty Tempts the Beast Beauty Tempts the Beast by Lorraine Heath is $1.99! This is part of the Sins for All Seasons historical romance series and we recently discussed this one on Cover Awe. It also features one of my favorite tropes: “seduction lessons” though I have a particular weakness for it being flipped, with the heroine being the teacher. If you have any recs for that, let me know below! She wants lessons in seduction Althea Stanwick was a perfect lady destined to marry a wealthy lord, until betrayal left her family penniless. Though she’s lost friends, fort…

The Duke Heist The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley is $1.99! This is book one in a new series and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Elyse was super excited about the heist element, though I remember her mentioning that there’s a malecalico kitten and how that’s rather rare, though not impossible. A NYT bestselling author kicks off a new Regency series of “irresistible romance and a family of delightful scoundrels” as a woman looking to recover a stolen painting accidentally kidnaps a duke instead. (Eloisa James) Chloe Wynchester is completely forgettable—a cur…

The Library of the Unwritten The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith is $1.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a C+, noting it was the wrong book for her at the time, as it’s dark and rather angsty. Have you read it? In the first book in a brilliant new fantasy series, books that aren’t finished by their authors reside in the Library of the Unwritten in Hell, and it is up to the Librarian to track down any restless characters who emerge from those unfinished stories. Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing– a neutral space in Hell…

Girly Drinks Girly Drinks by Malloy O’Meara is $2.99! I mentioned this on a previous Book Beat because it sounds like right up the Bitchery’s alley. If you like niche non-fiction or loved Amy Stewart’s The Drunken Botanist, maybe try this one. “At last, the feminist history of booze we’ve been waiting for!” —Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist From Los Angeles Times bestselling author Mallory O’Meara comes a lively and engrossing feminist history of women drinking through the ages Strawberry daiquiris. After I reviewed Opium and Absinthe by Lydia Kang, M.D., one of our commenters requested that I review Lydia Kang’s nonfiction book, Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything (co-written by Nate Pedersen). Well, gosh, it’s a sacrifice, but if I MUST read a book full of weird historical semi-medical remedies for things like Bubonic Plague, well, then I guess I must. I do it for you, Bitches. Quackery is what I call a good bathroom book. It has tiny short sections in the event that one’s visit to the lavatory is a brief one, but is interesting enough to hold my attention when I’m trapped there for a long time (I have medical issues, none of which I pl…

C+ Queen of Coin and Whispers by Helen Corcoran April 23, 2020 · The O'Brien Press Teen FictionLGBTQIAScience Fiction/FantasyYoung Adult Confession time: I skip to the end within the first 10% of most books. (Please don’t yell at me. I’ve already been told by horrified friends that it’s a moral failing.) When I skipped to the end of Queen of Coin and Whispers, I was hit by one of the most compelling lines I’ve read in a long time: She loved me as I loved her, fierce as a bloodied blade. Does it give you shivers, t…

Diablo Lake: Moonstruck RECOMMENDED: Diablo Lake: Moonstruck by Lauren Dane is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and thought it was a great start to the series. Here are some of her thoughts: This paranormal small Southern town of shifters and witches and rival pack tensions between the Dooleys and Pembrys is immersively fun, sexy, and thoughtful. Bonus points: witches AND vivid, loving female friendships. In Diablo Lake, Washington, a town populated by werewolves, witches, and more, magic woven deep into the earth protects the town’s secrets from outsiders. Katie Grad…

Huntress RECOMMENDED: Huntress by Malinda Lo is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+, but wouldn’t recommend it for romance readers necessarily: I recommend this for people looking for inclusive fantasy that feels at once fresh and traditional within multiple traditions. Nature is out of balance in the human world. The sun hasn’t shone in years, and crops are failing. Worse yet, strange and hostile creatures have begun to appear. The people’s survival hangs in the balance. To solve the crisis, the oracle stones are cast, and Kaede and Taisin, two sevent…

Angels’ Blood Angels’ Blood by Nalini Singh is $3.99! It’s part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is being price-matched. This is the first book in the very popular Guild Hunter series. I remember reading this a long time ago, but didn’t continue with the series because I prefer my series to be one couple per book. I know Singh switches to other couples later on, but I am impatient. Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best – but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal…

Someone to Romance Someone to Romance by Mary Balogh is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and, I believe, the most recent title in the Westcott series. It was also mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. The Bitchery loves Balogh and this series especially. Do you have a favorite? Love comes when you least expect it in this captivating new novel in the Wescott Regency romance series from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh. Lady Jessica Archer lost her own interest in the glittering excitement of romance after her cousin and dearest friend…

B- Questland by Carrie Vaughn June 22, 2021 · John Joseph Adams/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Science Fiction/Fantasy TW: PTSD, recollections of a school shooting, gaslighting Questland is pure geek-bait, and a fun book for all of those who dream of going to Hogwarts and Middle Earth. My husband and I gave our kid a name in Sindarin (Elvish), so basically the book is Carrie-bait. It revels in a quickly moving plot, a gorgeous setting, and a plethora of fantasy references, but suffers from a lack of developed characters…

Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake RECOMMENDED: Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall is $2.99! Carrie and I jointly reviewed this one and agreed on a B+. As a bisexual woman, I definitely felt seen by this book and I’m here for all the 2021 summer baking romance reads. Fans of Casey McQuiston, Christina Lauren, and Abby Jimenez will love this scrumptious and sweet romantic comedy from the “dizzyingly talented writer” of Boyfriend Material (Entertainment Weekly)! Following the recipe is the key to a successful bake. Rosaline Palmer has always lived by those rules…

I Hate You More I Hate You More by Lucy Gilmore is $1.99! This is an enemies to lovers romance and has some pretty good dogs. I know Gilmore’s books have been recommended in the comments previously and the Bitchery generally has positive thoughts. An unforgettably funny enemies-to-lovers romcom about a grumpy dog show judge, a determined former beauty queen, and a Golden Retriever more interested in stealing bacon than winning Best in Show. Ruby Taylor gave up pageant life the day she turned eighteen and figured she’d never look back. But when an old friend begs her…

B- Ramón and Julieta by Alana Quintana Albertson February 1, 2022 · Berkley Romance Ramón and Julieta is a romance novel about Ramón, a billionaire, and Julieta, a chef. It’s also a novel about identity, culture, ethics, gentrification, music, family (toxic and healthy), and food. I wasn’t sure how this couple could possibly find a happy ending, but I sure wanted them to. However, given the weight and nuance of the topics addressed, especially gentrification, I wasn’t completely satisfied with how the story resolved…

A Rare Vigilance by M.A. Grant June 22, 2021 · Carina Press Paranormal Content Warning: PTSD, violence and trauma I read this book at such a furious pace that I’m sure I missed the details. In fact, I know I did. Because I’m struggling to write this review beyond simply repeating “wow” to myself ad infinitum. There was such a wonderful balance between a strong character-driven development and sheer plot momentum that I couldn’t control myself. I just had to devour this book. Did I ignore all of my other responsibil…

CW: discussion of depression I’ve recently been through a lot, medically-speaking. I have a very rare disease called idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Basically, my airway grows closed with scar tissue for no known reason. I have had multiple surgeries to open up my airway again. The impact of the diagnosis and the surgeries has been emotional as much as it has been physical, so much so that I found myself in a very depressed, very hopeless place. Did I stay there? No. I booked myself into a psychiatric clinic for 9 days. Hours of intensive therapy later, I’m stronger, more confident, and ready for the next hurdle in this medical maelstrom that I find myself in. Or, at lea…

Time again for one of the most challenging recommendation features we have: READY, SET, GO! Here are the rules: We pick a specific sub-genre, trope, or type of romance, and we have to make ONE recommendation for that type. And no more than two sentences as to why. Just One. And our theme this month? This month: Historical Women in Trousers! Once spotted regularly in old skool romances where the back cover copy used words like “hoyden” or “hellion,” or perhaps lurking in stories featuring Sad Historical Businessmen, the Historical Women in Trousers wear, well, trousers. Maybe they’ve eschewed tradition, maybe it’s wardrobe shorthand for an assortment of traits (se…
