http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/themes/smartbitches/images/posts/kickass-women.jpg Recently I read Prospects of a Woman by Wendy Voorsanger, and discovered a new Kickass Woman in its pages. One of the characters is loosely based on real-life photographer Anne Brigman, a passionate traveller and artist who was a leading figure in the Photo-Secession Movement in the arts. The real-life photographer was in California later than her fictional counterpart, but the real and fictional women share a common artistic style and personal philosophy. Anne was born Anne Wardrope Nott to missionary parents in Hawa…

This HaBO is from Yaya, who wants to find this historical romance: Ok, so the first time is always memorable, right? Well I’ve kinda sorta forgotten the first historical romance I’ve read eons ago. The hero and our BLACK/RAVEN haired heroine gets married – marriage of convenience? I think so – not sure…but he hates her. Probably because he’s in love with someone else, she’s keeping him from his “one true love” by offering him her fortune (because she’s an heiress and he desperately needs that ka-ching) in exchange for his hand in marriage. Part of her face is scarred thus she’s been kept under a veil most her life. So he does the consummating thing, sight unseen – wham!-…

A Curious Beginning RECOMMENDED: A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn is $2.99! The latest book out now and it’s a good time to start this series., especially since many of the books are also on sale. This is a historical mystery and Sarah really enjoyed it. Here’s what she said: I read A Curious Beginning with an I-cannot-put-this-down enthusiasm and devoured it very quickly. I relished both the characters and the mystery. The Veronica Speedwell series is excellent and intelligent fun, and while the second isn’t quite as satisfying as the first, I heartily recommend them both. …

Bridgerton Collection: Volume 1 Bridgerton Collection: Volume 1 by Julia Quinn is $6.99! It’s a little pricier than what we’d normally feature but you get three full-length historical romances and these collections, when not on sale, are priced at $19.99. Not a bad deal! An enchanting collection containing the first three novels in New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn’s beloved Bridgerton series set in Regency England—The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, and An Offer from a Gentleman—now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix. The Duke and I When …

Depending on your part of the world, I hope you’re staying cool or warm! It’s a sweat fest here. My brother will be back on base after his deployment ends next month, and I’m ready to travel! He’s stationed in Europe and is excited for me to visit. Can’t wait! Anyway, let’s get into some links, shall we? … Sue sent us the deetz on this Kickstarter farming sim/visual novel. This ticks a lot of my gaming boxes and I’ll probably wind up backing it! Appreciate you, Sue! … Love The …

http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/bigstock-220625329-e1536262633224.jpgIt’s Whatcha Reading time! This is where we get to talk about what we’ve been reading, whether it was a good reading month, a slow one, or just plain terrible. It’s also a post that is terribly bad for all of our wallets. Carrie: I am reading A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World’s Smartest Birds of Prey by Jonathan Meiburg. ( A | BN | K ) As a result I have a new animal obsession, the Caracara, which is a like a crow brain and a raccoon’s dietary habits crossed with a vulture’s dietary habits and all shoved into a hawk’s body. The Princess Knight The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken is $2.99! This is book two in the Scarred Earth Saga. I loved and reviewed the first book and Lara reviewed this one, giving it a B: The cast of characters EXPLODES in this book. Pay attention to each and every new character; they are all important. We pop into a lot of different POVs which can be a little dizzying, but adds beautifully to the immersive world building of it all. In New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken’s gripping new fantasy romance series, the Blacksmith Queen must confront armies and pre…

CW: discussion of depression I’ve recently been through a lot, medically-speaking. I have a very rare disease called idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Basically, my airway grows closed with scar tissue for no known reason. I have had multiple surgeries to open up my airway again. The impact of the diagnosis and the surgeries has been emotional as much as it has been physical, so much so that I found myself in a very depressed, very hopeless place. Did I stay there? No. I booked myself into a psychiatric clinic for 9 days. Hours of intensive therapy later, I’m stronger, more confident, and ready for the next hurdle in this medical maelstrom that I find myself in. Or, at lea…

Anchored Hearts Anchored Hearts by Priscilla Oliveras is $1.99! This is book two in the Keys to Love series and has a second chance romance. This isn’t my favorite trope, but I enjoyed this book. If you like really emotional contemporaries, this will tick that box. Key West is the ideal backdrop for the summer read you need! Perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez, Jasmine Guillory, and Jen DeLuca, this gorgeous and stirring new love story from the author of Island Affair will touch your heart… Award-winning photographer Alejandro Miranda hasn’t been home to Key West in yea…

Any Duchess Will Do RECOMMENDED: Any Duchess Will Do by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the fourth book in the Spindle Cove series. It was also a Sizzling Book Club pick with Sarah saying, “This is a delightful historical romance, will familiar tropes explored in new ways.” What’s a duke to do, when the girl who’s perfectly wrong becomes the woman he can’t live without? Griffin York, the Duke of Halford, has no desire to wed this season–or any season–but his diabolical mother abducts him to “Spinster Cove” and insists he select a bride from the ladies in residence. Grif…

I know it’s a rough night for pets and Sarah said she cranked up a white noise machine for her dogs. Not a bad idea! Anyway, this is Wednesday Links, where we just talk about interesting, fun, or cool shit we see on the internet. Let’s get into it! … Vulture‘s profile on actress Jennifer Coolidge is just amazing! B Heartbreak Incorporated by Alex De Campi June 22, 2021 · Rebellion Publishing Ltd. ParanormalRomantic SuspenseRomance Heartbreak Incorporated is kind of a bonkers book, and I love that about it. It commits pretty hard to its own premise of a sexy, mysterious man breaking up relationships for money while also maybe doing vigilante justice on the side, and the aspiring journalist who wants to uncover all of his secrets (in both a sexy way and a hard-boiled PI kind of way). Also, there are demons, and this book is ve…

The Bride Test RECOMMENDED: The Bride Test by Helen Hoang is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. I loved this book so much and gave it an A-: The Bride Test is so beautiful and Hoang was right when she said it was impossible not to love Esme. She’s tenacious and battles against her fear of failure, of judgement, and of her own self-doubt, to become this confident and self-assured woman. This Bride Test has only solidified my love for Hoang’s romances; they are truly a gift to the genre. From the critically acclaimed author of The Kiss Quotient comes a …

The Blacksmith Queen RECOMMENDED: The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken is $2.99! This was my one pick for hilarious reading in our Ready Set Go. I also gave this an A-. Seriously, it’s so much fun: The Blacksmith Queen is a bloody, feminist romp that exudes girl power in all forms, and I’m envious of its fantasy girl squad. When a prophesy brings war to the Land of the Black Hills, Keeley Smythe must join forces with a clan of mountain warriors who are really centaurs in a thrilling new fantasy romance series from New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken. The…

Just Like That Just Like That by Cole McCade is $1.99! I thought we’ve featured this on sale previously, but I have no concept of time anymore. http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/WP/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Hayadoing21-300x300.jpgEvery now and again I’ve had to test different database settings by requesting comment threads, and in my last one, a few of you asked if these “Hayadoin” posts could be regular features. I love this idea, especially since you help form one of the most welcoming and thoughtful communities online, and I love reading what you have to say. So, hayadoin? What are you looking forward to this weekend, or this month? As for me, June is my birthday month, and the end of school and the start of summer, and once the cicadas stop dive-bombing me (or trying to craw up the back of my neck ew ew e…
