Algonkian has put together a team of five of the best professionals from all points to work with writers attending the Point Loma Writer's Conference. They include from New York, famous film producer and literary agent, Barbara Zitwer; list-building literary agent at Sandra Dijkstra Agency, Elise Capron; editor of the LA Review and former President of Pen USA, Kate Gale; fiction writer and editor of DEL SOL REVIEW and WEB DEL SOL, Michael Neff; and from Los Angeles, one of the best boutique agents in the business, Ms. Betsy Amster. Barbara J Zitwer agency specializes in discovering new writers from all over the world. They look for writers with original voices and who have commercial, international appeal, and for books that have potential to be developed for film and television. Barbara has written several books, as well as the play, PAPER DOLL, about Jaqueline Susann. She has also produced films such as VAMPIRE'S KISS with Nicolas Cage, and was also an Executive Producer on LAZARUS RISING with Columbia Tri-Star and Bernie Sofronski. Betsy Amster is president of Betsy Amster Literary Enterprises, a literary agency in Los Angeles. Before opening her agency in 1992, she spent ten years as an editor at Pantheon and Vintage and two years as editorial director of the Globe Pequot Press. A frequent instructor in UCLA Extension's Writers Program, Amster also runs publishing workshops at The Loft, the acclaimed literary center in Minneapolis, and at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers. Elise Capron is an agent for the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency--widely regarded as the best on the west coast. Their authors include Amy Tan, Kate White, Janell Cannon, and many more. Elise is list-building and looking for new manuscripts. She is Sandra's assistant and specializes in literary and women's fiction. An interview can be [found here].
Kate Gale will focus on the writing of publishable fiction. Kate is 2005-2006 President of PEN USA, the founder of Red Hen Press, The Los Angeles Review, and the WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS program for underserved communities. Her opera, Paradises Lost, was performed in part at the New York City Opera in May of 2006. She holds a Ph.D in literature from Claremont Graduate University. An interview can be [found here].

Using our unique model-and-context method, Algonkian students will study and apply techniques of craft, structure, and style culled from over 20 successful authors (and dramatists) including Ann Patchett, Ken Kesey, Annie Proulx, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tennessee Williams, Michael Chabon, Gail Godwin, Ernest Hemingway, V. Nabokov, Flannery O'Connor, Barbara Kingsolver, and Robert Graves. Writers, regardless of experience, will come away from this five day intensive with the specific knowledge they need to create an intellectual and emotionally powerful novel. The faculty will not only review promising novel concepts and consult with agents who work with Algonkian, but the event will also devote time to film adaptation, high concept pitching, and other aspects of novel-to-film. Students will also learn ALL THEY MUST KNOW about the publishing business. As a bonus, the perfect query letter and synopsis are included.
The Point Loma Writers Conference is limited to 15 STUDENTS. They will stay at the Point Loma conference center (Phone 1-619-223-4778). The location might be best described as a ski lodge, only it resides in San Diego. It has dormitory and private rooms, WI-FI, a full kitchen, and many other home-inspired features. The staff are dedicated to your comfort.
Please note that Algonkian will make all reservations. Also know that you have the option of staying at lodging nearby, or anywhere else in San Diego, as long as you arrive at the conference location every morning on time. If you do decide to stay elsewhere, your registration fee will be $535.00, but let us know before you register.
Before you make a decision about attending the conference, please review the Algonkian syllabus and author list. The tuition for the five day conference is $965.00 and that includes tuition, shuttle transportation from the airport, lodging for five nights, agent pitch sessions, breakfast and lunch, dinner on Friday night, the Algonkian workshop book, "Immersed in The Art of Fiction."

Students will arrive by Tuesday evening. The conference is five days, beginning Wednesday morning, lasting till the following Sunday. Sessions and exercises are intensive and continue through the day. The workshops begin promptly at 8:00 AM, lunch at noon, and end at 5:00 PM. Participants can unwind before dinner but are expected to work on their exercises in the evenings if necessary. As for supplies, participants should either bring their laptop or else plenty of note paper to write on in order to generate ideas and notes during discussions.

Point Loma and Ocean Beach
Minutes away from the Point Loma conference location is Old Town, the historical birthplace of San Diego. Here you can enjoy several free museums, shops that sell handcrafted wares, and the Plaza del Pasado bazaar where you will find traditional restaurants, one-of-a-kind shops and live music. Old Town is also the location of the nearest transit station where you can take a bus or trolley to any part of San Diego and even to Mexico. Only a mile away is Ocean Beach, a mixed community of small vacation cottages and vacation rentals and beautiful cliff side homes located along Sunset Cliffs. Ocean Beach offers great surfing, Dog Beach one of the few dog friendly beaches and great fishing from Ocean Beach Pier. Small charming restaurants, coffee houses and bars make up the unique area and communities of Ocean Beach. While you're at it, take a walk down the longest pier on this side of the world and watch the sunset.

About The Chief Editor and Workshop Leader
Michael Neff is a fiction editor, writer, teacher, and publisher. He is the founder and chief editor of WebdelSol.Com, the largest publisher of periodical contemporary fiction in the U.S. He edits the Del Sol Press and publishes several highly acclaimed national literary magazines including 5_Trope, In Posse Review, La Petite Zine, Perihelion, and The Potomac.
